San Bernardino City Unified School District
On the ballot: Measure Z
Key findings
- Measure Z is a $345M school bond, about $45 per $100K of assessed value a year through 2056–57, with about $670M in total repayment. It needs 55%. [1]
- The district serves nearly 45,000 students. Supporters cite 734 roof leaks last year, schools more than 55 years old and classrooms over 90 degrees. [2]
- No argument against was filed, and the argument in favor doesn't name its signers. [3]
Measure Z: $345M school repair bond
What it does: Bonds for roof, plumbing and HVAC repairs, classroom and lab modernization, technology, health and building-code upgrades, and career technical education. Annual audits and a citizens' oversight committee. 55% to pass. [2][1]
Cost: $45 per $100K of assessed value. A home assessed at $350K pays about $158 a year. Total repayment is about twice the amount borrowed. (calculated from the tax rate statement) [1]
Does it solve a lasting problem? Leaking roofs and failing air conditioning are classic bond projects. Missing from the record: the district's facilities master plan and how much of its older bond money remains. I didn't find either in the sources I checked, so check the district's site before voting.
